Firefighters at Chichester fire station have called on children in the city to help brighten up the station’s bay doors with colourful tributes celebrating key workers.

Children are being asked to paint or draw a picture of their key worker heroes, which the crews at the station will then display on the station’s bay doors for everyone to see.

The idea is being led by green watch firefighter Mark McCarthy.

He said: “There are so many unsung heroes in our communities, and we thought this would be a good show of support for all the hard work they are doing to keep everyone safe during this period of social isolation.

“The picture can be of any key worker, whether they work in the NHS, drive a delivery van, work in a care home with older or vulnerable people, as well as teachers, veterinary workers and supermarket staff.

“Everyone knows a key worker who has stepped up to the mark recently, and now is their time to shine.

“We are fortunate in Chichester to be in quite a prominent location on the roundabout at North Gate, which makes it an ideal place to showcase all the hard work our key workers are carrying out in the city.

“Once all of this is over and we have returned to a sense of normality, we will pick a winning drawing, and the lucky artist will be invited down to the station for a personal tour to find out more about the work we carry out as a fire and rescue service.”
