Crews remain at scene of large Devil’s Dyke fire

West Sussex firefighters remain at the scene of a 200 square metre blaze in the open at Devil’s Dyke.

Crews were first called to the incident at 5.24pm on Thursday (April 22).

Six fire engines – one from Shoreham, one from Henfield, one from Burgess Hill, two from Brighton and one from Hove – were sent to tackle the blaze at The Dyke Golf Club, off Devil’s Dyke Road in Poynings.

The fire, which was not thought to involve any buildings, was also fought using a command unit from Haywards Heath, two off road vehicles from Crawley and Horsham and a water carrier from Burgess Hill.

In an update on Friday morning (April 23), West Sussex Fire said: “We had one crew in attendance overnight keeping a watching brief to ensure no further reignition.

“This morning relief crews have been brought in to carry out a reinspection to ensure there are no further hotspots.”

These crews were to be supported by a drone, the fire service added.

Devil’s Dyke Road is expected to remain closed this morning, West Sussex Fire added, to allow for the safe movement of crews.

“Please continue to avoid the area for the time being,” added West Sussex Fire.
