Father and son’s 100 mile walk raises nearly £1,700 for Chichester and Worthing hospitals

Steven said the walk was 'really hard going' but he and his son, Elliot, managed to reach 140 miles

From Monday (April 13) to Sunday (April 19) last week, Steven Morgan, 65, and his 13-year-old son Elliot used the field at the back of their house in June Lane, Midhurst, to raise funds for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for frontline NHS staff at two hospitals in West Sussex - St Richard’s in Chichester and Worthing.

Steven, who has Crohn’s Disease, completed the six-day challenge in memory of Megan Cox — the nurse who saved his life when he was given two weeks to live 20 years ago.

After making his story public, Steven has also now been in contact with Megan’s family.

He said: “I never knew Megan had any family at all.

“I’ve had loads of contact from grandchildren, aunties, brothers, her daughter.

“As soon as lockdown is over, we are all going to meet up and have tea and cake which is what Megan always used to bring me in when I was in hospital.

“It is the loveliest ending to a fantastic story.”

Steven, a volunteer bereavement councillor and former police officer, said the walk was ‘really hard going’ but he and his son managed to reach 140 miles.

He said: “The walk was fantastic.

“I was desperate to do 100 miles. That was my personal goal and my young lad kept me going. He was a great strength.

“Lots of local friends came to support and we had good weather apart from one day but that did soften the ground up which made the next day easier. It was really lovely to do.

“We’re just under £1,700 now. I’m absolutely over the moon and that’s the most I’ve ever raised.”
