Maggie South, who lives in Petworth, is a keen and lifelong knitter and after retiring began to teach knitting to children and adults.

She said: “I simply have to have a pair of knitting needles in my hands every evening.

“I decided it was important for me as a lifelong knitter to pass on skills so others may also enjoy the creativity, calm and sense of achievement that making something brings.

“Research has proven that knitting and crochet with their rhythmic and controlled movements and the following of a pattern not only gives a sense of well being but may also reduce stress, promote brain function and ward off the development of age-related illness such as arthritis and dementia.”

Maggie began teaching children to knit through the Knitting for All ‘Kids Knit’ programme in primary schools three years ago. There is a small charge for attending and Maggie always has some yarn and patterns for sale at discount prices.

Maggie has recently started a new branch of the Knitting and Crochet Guild in the area called ‘The Wealden Yarnies’.

Currently these are all run via Zoom on the first Saturday of the month, but it is hoped the Yarnies will be able to meet in person. All are welcome to join, and you do not have to be a member of the Guild to attend meetings. For anyone interested in learning to knit, improving their skills, or joining a Knit Café or the Wealden Yarnies, contact Maggie on [email protected]
