Horace said the piece was commissioned after another NHS-inspired mural, donated by the artist to Worthing Hospital and displayed in the front entrance, proved enormously popular with visitors and staff alike.

The artist who, in the vein of Banksy, is known only as Horace, said: “The original painting was pessimistic, a warning of what could happen to the NHS in the wrong hands.

“I wanted to do something optimistic here, a celebration of the real people who work in hospitals every day to help others, they are like angels, I couldn’t do their job.

“It’s a colourful and fun piece. I wanted it to be cheerful.“

The mural entitled ‘angel rainbow’ was commissioned by the Organ Donation Committee in connection with NHS blood and transplant.

Angela Fisher, chair of the organ donation committee, said: “This artwork is in recognition of the achievements of NHS ITU (intensive treatment unit) clinical teams, especially our ITU nurses who work tirelessly supporting patients and their families.

“It’s brilliant, I love it.”
