Members of the pro-animal group PETA have written to Horsham District Council seeking permission to erect the tombstone memorial.

PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - say they hope the memorial would save lives by encouraging drivers to travel safely, and choose vegan meals.

The sheep were in a lorry which overturned on the northbound carriageway of the A24 at Dial Post on Monday afternoon (Seeptember 28).

PETA says its tribute would feature an image of a sheep next to the words ‘In Memory of the Sheep Who Suffered and Died in a Lorry Accident at This Spot. Try Vegan.’

PETA vice president Mimi Bekhechi said: “For nothing more than some pieces of meat, this crash left animals suffering on an already terrifying trip, likely to the abattoir.

“PETA’s roadside memorial can prevent further tragedies, including human ones, by reminding people to drive with care and spare a thought for animals by no longer eating them.”

The crash shut the A24 for several hours and police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to email [email protected] quoting serial 933 of 28/09.

A 34-year-old man from High Wycombe was arrested after the crash on suspicion of dangerous driving.
