The travellers set up camp in the recreation ground on April 13. Police dispatched officers to the location and conducted a site assessment before issuing a section 61 order which forced them to vacate the premises on April 16.

Contractors Biffa and Tivoli were joined by residents in a clean-up effort to dispose of the remains left by the travellers. Arun District Council said it was ‘grateful’ for the assistance of the residents.

A spokesperson said: “While seeing rubbish left behind is always distressing, it represents only a fraction of the amount of litter which is collected daily throughout our parks, beaches and streets.

“We urge everyone to take their litter home if the bins are full and dispose of it in their general waste in order to keep our Arun beauty spots looking great.”
