This is why Medmerry Beach in Selsey was closed today

On its Facebook page, Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said the piece of artillery was spotted on Medmerry Beach.

A search was carried out, the ordnance was located, photographed and a cordon was put in place and the beach was closed.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said photos were sent to its operations centre and passed to the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.

A controlled explosion was carried and the beach later reopened.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said ordnance found on this beach has been found to be highly explosive, so the public shoould not touch it and instead all the Coastguard straight away.
