West Sussex travellers' site hailed a success

18 months since opening, the travellers' site at Westhampnett has been hailed as a '˜big success story'.

Assessing the benefits of the site at a Chichester District Council (CDC) cabinet meeting on Tuesday, councillors heard that the number of unauthorised encampments around West Sussex had dropped from 68 to 30 since it opened in March, 2015.

The total number of ‘dwell days’ has also falled from 252 to 78.

The Gypsy and Travellers Transit Site - the only such facility across West Sussex which serves the whole county - was a joint £1m initiative amongst various councils, and is owned by CDC and run by the county council.

Leader Tony Dignum said: “It’s a success story in terms of design and construction and a success story in terms of West Sussex County Council’s management of the site.”
