Royal British Legion members joined armed forces personnel, cadets, scouts, guides and other organisations in marching from East Street through the city centre to the war memorial in Litten Gardens.

There a two minutes’ silence was observed at 11am together with a wreath-laying service. Prayers for peace were spoken and the national anthem recited before the parade returned to East Street.

A two minutes’ silence was also held on Friday, November 11, at the Market Cross at 11am to mark Armistice Day.

Commemorative events were held at a number of other locations on Sunday, including at East Wittering War Memorial, where the Remembrance service was conducted by Rev. Steve Davies, chaplain to the Wittering and District branch of the Royal British Legion.

Great Ballard School held its annual Remembrance service in St Margaret’s Church, the Eartham parish church adjoining the school grounds.

Parents, staff and pupils gathered to remember all the old pupils who gave their lives fighting in conflicts, with a roll of honour read out.

Marrott House and Lodge Care Home in Chichester staged their annual balloon release.

Residents, staff and visitors paid their respects by releasing red balloons with messages during the national two minutes’ silence at 11am.

Oakwood School pupils recreated an old tradition to mark Armistice Day with a walk through the woods to St Mary’s Chapel, Sennicotts, for a service of remembrance.

Following in the footsteps of hundreds of boys, the school children walked the mile along woodland paths to their local chapel, where Father Charles Howard conducted a short service of remembrance and Oakwood head teacher, Clare Bradbury, laid a poppy wreath on the grave of Oakwood founder and decorated soldier, Captain Richard Playford Fenn.
