The event was organised on Whyke Oval by Grace Church and offered a range of activities plus refreshments.

Chris Kimbangi, the main organiser, said: “We thought it went really well. There was lots of really good feedback and from what people were saying overall, there was a feeling of gratitude and thanks for thinking of them.

“A lot of people expected there to be a catch and they would have to pay for something or pay a donation, so they almost couldn’t believe that it genuinely was all free.

“We gave away 970 burgers and used 400 firelighting kits on one of the activities. It is hard to tell the numbers there but it is estimated 800 to 1,000 people came.

“Our aims of the day were to she people that church is not boring or all for the older age range. Visitors encountered all different age groups and had a lot of fun.”

Many of the area’s clubs and organisations offered their services for demonstrations on the day or donated prizes for the raffle.

As part of the day, there was a wishing tree set up next to the Grace Church information table and people were asked to write down other things they would like to see in their community.

Over the next week or so, church members will be going through the wishes to see what they can put on for the area to answer those wishes.

Already, a children’s activity morning has been planned for ages up to 11 on the morning of Saturday, July 15. This will be a free family event.
