An application for change of use has been submitted to Chichester District Council to change the former Cargo store from retail to a restaurant.

A spokesperson for Wahaca said: “We’ve put forward planning applications for a beautiful space in Chichester, and are really hopeful that we’ll be bringing our unique take on Mexican market eating to the south coast later this year.

“We’ve been watching as the food scene in Chichester continues to go from strength to strength and we can’t wait to become a part of it.”

If it gains approval from the council it will join the likes of Wildwood, Zizzi, Prezzo, and Wagamama.

Prior to opening in January 2014 Wagamama was initially refused permission from changing from retail to restaurant, as it meant there was 15m of ‘non-retail frontage’ in South Street, because of its location next to Pizza Express.

Currently next to the proposed restaurant site is Orvis, Tesco and Game.

Other items listed in the application include adding a kitchen extraction point, and a floor plan showing the proposed layout.

Furniture store Cargo Home closed last month after the company decided to close all 41 of its shops across the UK.

Wahaca is the brainchild of 2005’s MasterChef winner, Thomasina Miers.
