Platinum couple were next-door neighbours

A Chichester couple who have lived in the area all their lives have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Ronald and Beryl Robinson and marked the special occasion with a party last Wednesday.

They were married on November 9, 1946, having met as teenagers.

Ronald explained: “We lived next door to each other when Beryl was 13 and I was 14 years old.

“In 1942, I joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. We wrote to each other and through those letters and occasional meetings, our feelings grew for each other.

“We had long absences during the war. I returned from the Pacific in 1946 and we were married shortly after at West Wittering Church.”

The couple have two children, Phillip and Jennifer, as well as two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The platinum wedding was celebrated with a lunch and party at Crouchers Hotel, on the Birdham Road, with the family.

Ronald added: “Our two bridesmaids were also there. We very much enjoyed the occasion.”
