CHICHESTER police has visited supermarkets to test shoppers’ tyre safety.

Out of 270 vehicles tested, 42 were found to be below the legally-required minimum 1.6mm tread depth and the drivers given advice.

Officers attended supermarkets in Selsey, Midhurst and Chichester between October 15-18 to demonstrate the 20p test, whereby a 20p coin is inserted into a tyre’s main tread grooves to see if the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread.

This process is then repeated in all the main grooves and at several points around the tyre’s circumference.

If drivers can see the rim of the coin when inserting it at any point, the tyre might be illegal.

PCSO Jason Lemm said: “Your tyres’ condition is critical for acceleration, braking, steering and cornering and as the driver, you are responsible for making sure tyres are legal and roadworthy.”
