Chichester bin cleaning service to be introduced

The foetid pong of unwashed wheelie bins could be a thing of the past in Chichester after the district council agreed to spend £41,000 setting up a cleaning service.

At a meeting of the cabinet on Tuesday (May 12), members approved the use of reserves for the service, which is expected to swell the council’s coffers by around £27,000 per year by 2024/25.

Some £22,500 will be spent on the washing equipment and £18,500 on a 3.5 tonne vehicle to carry it.

Penny Plant, cabinet member for contract services, said the plan was to focus on business use first, with domestic use – starting with garden waste – being phased in later.

While no firm prices for the use of the service have yet been set, members were told it would cost around £10 per wash for business use and £4.50 per wash for domestic use.

The idea was welcomed by all.

Susan Taylor (Con, The Witterings) said she hoped the scheme would replace some of the money lost to the council during the pandemic.

Roy Briscoe (Con, Westbourne) agreed, adding: “I think it’s a great idea. It’s going to support  our revenue going forward – this is the first phase of moving forward.”

Peter Wilding (Con, Fernhurst) joked: “My dustbin hasn’t been cleaned for 25 years, so I’ll be queueing up for that service.”

It was made clear to the cabinet that the service would not be opened immediately – the equipment and vehicle need to be bought first – with September mooted as a possible starting point.
