The long-awaited public consultation began this morning, Thursday, July 14, with details published on the Government’s website showing five upgrade options, which will cost between £47m to £280m to complete.

The improvements will take between 15 and 41 months to undertake, depending on which option is taken forward, and according to Highways England figures, could see peak journey times improve by as much as five minutes 40 seconds.

They including changes to four junctions such as flyovers or new traffic lights, an extra lane added between the Fishbourne and Bognor roundabouts, and even a new Stockbridge link road being built to the south.

The consultation period will last for ten weeks, and all the documents will be on display at 14 public exhibitions to be held at local venues, starting on July 25 at Chichester Assembley Rooms.

The building of a new northern bypass had been considered in earlier plans before it was dropped, and the documents again state that it wasn’t seen as ‘viable’ because it exceeded the budget for the scheme.
