A county council spokesperson said: "A new signalised pedestrian crossing being installed on the main A272 in Petworth this month will help residents and visitors cross the road safely.

"The A272, near Downview Road, is a main road and has to be crossed by children using the bus service to Midhurst Rother College and residents and visitors accessing Petworth Sports Ground and Petworth Deer Park.

"The puffin crossing will have red blister paving to aid visually impaired pedestrians using it, associated road resurfacing and new road markings.

"Above ground detectors will help with the timing of the signals and LED lamps will be used which will not only improve visibility, but help keep energy and maintenance costs down."

The road will remain open during the works with traffic signals in place.

The works are expected to finish by Thursday, April 8 but 'this is dependent on weather conditions and other factors'.

The county council spokesperson added: "There will be restricted parking by the Petworth Park cricket lodge entrance for the duration of the scheme as the layby will be used to store works materials.

"The west and east bound bus stops on the A272, just west of Downview Drive, will also be closed for the duration of the works – this has been agreed in consultation with the bus service providers for safety reasons."
