The application was approved earlier this month and the new courts will replace two junior courts at the Chichester Racquets and Fitness Club in Oaklands Way.

The racquet sport is similar to tennis but the courts are usually one third of the size and the game uses walls and uses different racquets and balls.

The application drew some positive responses from the public.

Ms Gail Egan said: "I have played Padel tennis in France and it's great fun. I'm hoping it comes to Chichester so we can have this facility. It's a popular way to get outdoor exercise, so I hope it goes ahead.

"I'm a member of the tennis club and I understand from them that there are very few changes to the site in order to implement it, so I hope it can be passed as soon as possible."

Another comment, from James Ward, read: "Padel tennis is an up and coming game, very popular in Southern Europe, where I have played it in Spain and Portugal. It is now Spain's second most popular sport.

"It appeals to all ages and abilities, and is always played as a doubles game. Great fun and good exercise. I have played it in Streatham, which is one of the nearest courts, so I really hope that we will be able to play it in Chichester.

"I understand there is very little in the way of material changes, and therefore, I sincerely hope that the Council approves this application."

The plans were approved on April 8. You can find out more by visiting the district council's planning portal here: 20/00418/FUL
