Extension request for Fishbourne church hall demolition

A CHURCH is requesting more time to carry out its plans to demolish its church hall and build two apartments.

Rev Moira Wickens has applied on behalf of St Peter and St Mary, Fishbourne, to extend an existing permission to demolish the church hall in Mill Lane.

Permission was originally granted in October, 2009, as part of two separate schemes.

The first was to demolish the existing church hall and replace it with two apartments.

It was hoped this will fund the second application for a replacement church hall close to St Peter and St Mary.

Chichester District Council granted an extension to the second phase in November last year, given the church until 2017 to start the work.

The original application was submitted in early 2008 by the then-vicar Rev Clive Ashley.

A design and access statement submitted at the time described the existing church hall as ‘inadequate’ for its purpose, being ‘too small, damp and in poor condition’.

“The parish needs are for the provision of a separate building close enough for interaction with the church to meet all the church needs and to assist the development with young people,” it said.

The statement described the distance between the current hall and the church as a ‘serious impediment’ to the ‘family of the church’.

If an extension is approved it will likely give the church another five years to start demolition work.
