Views sought on new Southbourne housing development

Views on a proposed new housing development in Southbourne are being sought.

Late last year Radian Group announced the acquisition of land east of Breach Avenue.

The site has outline permission for 34 homes after a Chichester District Council decision to reject an application was overturned on appeal by a planning inspector.

Subsequent bids by the council to quash the appeal decision in the High Court failed.

Since purchasing the land, Radian has been working on the detail of a reserved matters application.

It has made its initial plans public before submitting a formal application to the council.

It is hoping to submit an application in the summer and start work on site in the autumn/winter if permission is granted.

According to the website: “We have carefully considered the appearance of the local area when designing our proposed homes to ensure that they would sit comfortably in their setting and be a positive addition to the local community.

“With this is mind, we are proposing a traditional design approach with a select palette of materials to compliment the local vernacular in line with the made Southbourne Parish Neighbourhood Plan - these include stock brick, tile hanging, weatherboarding, feature oak porches, plain tile and reconstituted slate.

“The overall scale, density and massing of the proposed development is sympathetic to the surrounding settlement and both embraces and enhances the landscape setting, creating a cohesive scheme where the environment, landscape and build form work together.”

The developer is proposing a mix of two one-bedroom flats, nine two-bedroom houses, 16 three-bedroom houses and seven four-bedroom houses.

Of the 34 total homes, 11 would be affordable, with 87 car parking spaces across the development.

The orchard on the western part of the site would be retained and enhanced to provide a natural buffer between existing and new homes.
