The Princess Royal was accompanied by The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean of Chichester, into the 900-year-old Chichester Cathedral, where she enjoyed a special service with more than 600 members.

The Princess is a patron of the Townswomen’s Guilds, which is still one of the largest women’s groups in the UK.

Jenny Rideout, the national chairman of the Townswomen’s Guilds, said: “Chichester Cathedral is the perfect venue for our service.

“It is an amazing blend of ancient and modern, with architectural and artistic treasures from every century since its foundation 900 years ago.

“This year’s event is very special, taking place at the spectacularly beautiful Chichester Cathedral, with Princess Anne joining us.

“So many people have expressed interest in attending, but tickets have sold incredibly quickly.”
