The quilt, made by Friends’ trustee Sue Barge, will be the top prize at the Eye Appeal raffle this year.

“It just seemed appropriate to make something which shows how important good eye care really is – sight matters for so much that we enjoy doing, and sewing is perhaps my favourite hobby,” she said.

To promote the event, John Lewis at Home agreed to display the quilt in the Chichester store.

Friends’ chairman Jane Ramage said: “We really appreciate the support of John Lewis at Home Chichester, enabling us to show the quilt to best advantage – it’s a double quilt, and looks wonderful on a bed, but it would also make a great throw for snuggling under on chilly evenings when the nights draw in.

“The colours are beautiful – the essence of autumn – and a delight to the eye.”

The Friends’ appeal aims to provide more sophisticated equipment for diagnosis of eye problems, so that local patients won’t have to travel further afield.

Tickets for the autumn raffle cost £1 each, and are available at the Friends’ Shop at St Richard’s Hospital.

They will also be on sale from committee members and at the Spirit of Winter Fayre at Great Ballard School on October 25.
