Royal return for Chichester care home

Residents at a Chichester care home had a return visit by a member of the royal family.

Princess Alexandra was last welcomed to Donnington House Care Home on May 12, 1961 when she came to the city to lay the foundation stone of Chichester Festival Theatre.

This time the Princess was at the home to open the new Woodger Wing which has been part-funded by the FG Woodger Trust.

The Princess' visit was low key and in marked contrast to her previous visit, when thousands of people lined the route from Chichester to Birdham Road.

She was welcomed by various dignitaries including the deputy

Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Gordon Tregear, Chichester District Council chairman John Ridd and chairman of Donnington House Trustees, John Shippam.

She also met Jean Hardstaff, vice-chairman and architect in charge of the building work, matron Anne Bareham and vice-chairman of the FG Woodger Trust, Rosamund Champ.

During the formal opening of the wing, the princess unveiled a commemorative plaque, watched by the mayor of Chichester, Cllr Michael Woolley, along with residents, staff, relatives and representatives of organisations which have close links with the home.
