Selsey Coastguard call-outs: Woman found unconscious on beach near Emsworth and kayaker goes missing at Bracklesham

A woman was found unconscious on a beach near Emsworth and a kayaker was reported missing at Bracklesham Bay on Saturday (February 6).

In what was Selsey Coastguard's second call-out of the day, volunteers were tasked to Prinsted at 1.20pm to an unconscious female on the beach with paramedics and Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team.

A spokesperson said: "The teams worked together to firstly administer casualty care and then extricate the casuality by stretcher from the beach and into the hands of the awaiting ambulance."

In its fourth and final call-out of the day, at 4.30pm, the Coastguard assisted in the search for an overdue kayaker at Bracklesham.

"The team were tasked with Selsey and Hayling Lifeboats as well as the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175," the spokesperson said. "Thankfully the kayaker was found safe and well, safety advice was given and all assets were stood down.

RNLI Selsey Lifeboat Station said the search ran from Medmerry along the coast to West Wittering.

The kayak was found off West Wittering and the person was 'fit and well'.

On Saturday, Selsey Coastguard volunteers were also paged to reports of possible ordnance close to Bill Point, Selsey at 12.10pm, and on Medmerry Beach at 2.15pm.

The item at Bill Point was located but it was quickly deemed not to be ordnance 'and possibly an old garden roller'.

"The first informant did the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard as they were unsure what it was," the Coastguard said.

A search of Medmerry Beach was also carried out but nothing was found.

The Coastguard spokesperson said: “The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble. Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
