Selsey fireworks go off with a bang

SELSEY took thousands of people on a trip around the world with their annual firework display, which saw entertainments and displays from as far afield as China.

The popular Selsey Fireworks was once more hailed a huge success, held at the White Horse playing field last weekend (October 12).

The weather was kind to visitors who were treated to a spectacular display for the 35th anniversary of the event.

An enthralled audience watched the wonderful display of colourful fireworks, perfectly synchronised to well known music from around the world to match this year’s theme of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’.

Dave Butcher is the chairman of the event, and was pleased with another successful year.

Dave said: “It was a spectacular night, and the public have given us some great feedback on our website.

“More than 6,000 people turned up which was lovely to see.”

A particular favourite was the Chinese section, but the outstanding finale featuring ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ proved sensational and absolutely delighted the crowd.

The fireworks were supplied and fired by Selsey-based Selstar Fireworks who travelled to China and handpicked the material for Saturday’s display.

Live music came courtesy of local band ‘Sticky Rhythm’s Reggae Got Soul’ who entertained the crowds from a temporary stage and attracted a good number of followers.

The organisation and funding for the event is done by a devoted team of committee members and more than 90 other volunteers join them on the day to ensure the event is successful and safe.

Over 80 businesses from Selsey, Chichester, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and surrounding areas generously supported the event and enabled organisers to hold down the entrance prices despite an increase of 23 per cent in costs.

Hundreds of families attended and many people travel from long distances to attend the first major event of fireworks season in the South East.

Selsey Fireworks 2014 will be back even better and stronger and the committee are already working to ensure this happens.
