THE position of a new street lighting column is causing a couple from Selsey to feel ‘trodden on’.
Tom Rudling and his wife, who live in Beacon Drive, are battling with energy giant SSE over a lamp post which has been moved – and is now blocking the sea view from his bay window.
“It was perfect where it was before. We didn’t mind it.
“The new position means I’ve going to have difficulties getting out of my drive.
“But the man putting it more or less told me I was a pretty useless driver.
“It is not a main road, we are a close.
“EU regulations say they have to be so high and so many spaces apart. The company is saying it is nothing to do with them, it’s the council.
“I feel like I’m being trodden on by a big company which doesn’t understand what I’m saying.”
A spokesman for SSE said: “The new lighting columns are intended to improve safety.
“The position of the lights is agreed with West Sussex County Council. The existing lights are nearing the end of their operational lifetime.
“The new lights are more energy-efficient.
“We aim to provide the best customer service possible, and I can confirm we will follow it up directly with the gentleman concerned to see if we can find a solution.”
In April 2010 SSE Contracting signed a 25 year maintenance contract with West Sussex County Council.
