Sir Stirling Moss backs campaign against new northern A27 bypass

A Sir Stirling Moss has signed the Chichester Deserves Better (CDB) petition and left the comment: “A NORTHERN BYPASS WOULD BE A DISASTER. THERE MUST BE ANOTHER SOLUTION.”

According to a member of CDB it is the famous British racing driver, who often attends Goodwood’s motor racing events.

Ben Kirk said: “I have checked this out and it is genuine, he has personally sent me an email this morning to wish us luck with the campaign and confirm as such.”

Nearly 4,000 people have now signed Chichester Deserves Better’s petition against a new northern road through Lavant - one of seven options being considered by Highways England for improving Chichester’s stretch of the A27.

This week saw a rival A27 campaign launched suggesting a new northern route could be ‘best for Chichester’.

The new Best4Chichester website states: “To most who live south of the existing A27 and have suffered a decade or more of misery, at first sight the northern route appears to offer the best traffic separation of through and local traffic.

“And this does not inflict on all users of the A27, chaos and disruption for three-and-a-half years, while work on the existing road takes place.”

Group member Christopher Page said Best4Chichester had been set up to counter the ‘disproportionate effect of the well-resourced, vociferous, and misleading propaganda of the Chichester Deserves Better campaign’.

However Mr Kirk said he wished to meet members of Best4Chichester to discuss common ground and to ‘find the best long-term result for Chichester’. He said: “It is not in the interests of Chichester to have opposing campaigns working against each other, this only serves to make this a north vs south issue, something we have never wanted it to be.”
