Six bedroom Felpham home with a host of original features close to the beach

Built in the 1930s, 91 Crossbush Road is located on the private Summerley estate and, thanks in part to the estate’s careful preservation of characterful homes, retains a host of fascinating original features.

Vendor Malcolm Doe said his three-floor, six-bed home still has its original timber-panelled reception hall, wood block flooring and many other characteristics from the inter-war period.

Malcolm said: “There’s quite a bit of history to the house … A colonel had it built as a weekend home, with the top floor for the servants.

“Today, the room in the kitchen used to the be the gardener’s room, with a separate toilet.

“We still have the servants’ bells, too – and nearly all of them still work, including the master-board in the kitchen.

“As a result, the bells ring in all the separate rooms and the children used to love using them!”

Malcolm said four of the six bedrooms are on the first floor and are spacious double rooms.

The final two are on the top floor of the house: “They were the servants’ bedrooms, so they’re a little smaller as the roof is a bit limited in terms of height.”

When people walk inside the house, they encounter a hall that is entirely timber blocked and wood panelled.

This pointer to a bygone day continues through the house: “The office and the dining rooms have wood block flooring - and there’s the original sink in the utility room and toilets as well.

“It’s quite a special house full of quirkiness: it’s got doors in the top floor that go onto the attic, as opposed to having a loft hatch, and there’s quite a bit of storage space in there.”

Malcolm said he loved the character of the house itself: “There’s a lovely old-style fireplace in the living room and you just don’t get things like that anymore.

“It was so well built back then, it’s very solid and has lots of character that you can feel when you walk in.”

As far as the ‘fair-sized’ garden is concerned, ‘it would be considered quite big for nowadays’.

Moreover, fresh air and open vistas are on tap, as this family home is only a 100-yard stroll from the beach: “It’s literally a two-minute walk and you can also see the sea from the top floor – we go there most days to take the dog out. He loves walking on the beach and I love watching the sea itself … “

Malcolm said the house would suit a family down to the ground, especially one which would enjoy living in a house with bags of character.

“It’s also lovely and quiet on the private estate.

“It’s so peaceful – but there’s also a general convenience store come post office at the estate entrance, which is a meeting place for quite a few people, plus a Tesco express the same distance away.”
