The group was nominated for the Community Matters scheme at the Havant store and supported through tokens given to customers for the monthly hand-out.

Its new charity shop, called The Chalet, was opened by county councillor Sandra James last month. It was built by Southbourne Men’s Shed, which meets in the Old School Annexe at Southbourne Age Concern.

Southbourne Men’s Shed has been going only a year but needed to expand and, at the same time, the Age Concern Centre needed a new fundraising shop.

So, it was agreed Age Concern would provide the materials and the shedders would build the shop.

The Chalet was officially opened by Bourne county councillor Sandra James last month, followed by lunch in the centre.

Age Concern chairman John Southgate said: “Judy, our shop manager, is thrilled, of course, to have everything just as she wanted, with shelving and lights. She has done a wonderful job and it looks fantastic.”

The shop is open on Wednesday mornings, 10am to midday. Donations are welcome.

Shedders have done a number of small jobs for Age Concern and a number of them join in the Wednesday lunch gatherings.
