Stranger's kindness stuns Emsworth family of terminally-ill mum Lindsey

The husband of a terminally-ill mum who is battling cancer has been left stunned after a caring stranger handed his family almost £4,000.

Shane Yerrell presented £3,921 to Lindsey Gates and her family to help pay for the brave mum-of-two’s funeral.

Shane, 33, of Essex, runs community interest company Through The Fight, which aims to support people in desperate need.

He was inspired to help Lindsey and her family after reading of her plight at the end of June.

She was left stranded in Florida after an accident in her hotel room left her with a severely broken leg.

To her family’s horror, medics in the US then revealed the devastating news that Lindsey’s cancer had spread to her bones and that she was too ill to fly.

“Lindsey is such an incredible woman,” said Shane.

“It’s great she got back. She is really positive. I just feel privileged to have met her.”

Lindsey returned home last month. Her husband Jason, 44, said the family had been overwhelmed by the public’s support.

“Shane is a fantastic person and he will always be a hero to us,” he added.

“It was unbelievable to think people who didn’t know her wanted to give up their time to help in any way they can.”

Lindsey is being cared for by The Rowans Hospice and hopes to use the money to arrange her perfect funeral.

Speaking of the trip to the USA in June, Jason added: “Never in a million years did we think so many people would be willing to help a small family from Emsworth.

“As a family we can never come close to thanking everyone for everything, no matter how big or small the part they played was.

“We still have a long and painful road ahead, but again all the help and support makes it that little bit easier.”

Lindsey has two daughters – Charley, 14, and Brooke, six.
