The mystery of Chichester’s ancient sinking street

Sinking West Street

Mystery surrounds the appearance of a series of widening depressions and patchwork cracks in the road surface on Chichester’s West Street.

Theories for identical road surface damage North of the Downs at Midhurst have been as wide ranging as medieval ditches, underground streams and centuries old cellar roofs collapsing.

Now substrata scanning is likely to be on the cards to find out what the problem is.

County councillor Gordon McAra said: “West Street seems to be suffering from the same sinking potholes as Midhurst. Maybe like Rumbold’s Hill, there are underground cellars and ditches, which is quite likely as its only a few yards from the Roman amphitheatre at the Novium.”
