THE FORMER estates manager of Chichester High School for Girls has highlighted a tribute to victims of the Titanic disaster 100 years ago.
Keith Teesdale, now living in Hayling Island, revealed the memorial plaque had been discovered on the site of his former school in Stockbridge Road, when work was done on the building. With its future being uncertain, he believed the plaque should be saved.
The white-brick memorial stone reads: ‘Wreck of Titanic April 16 1912. Lives lost 1706, lives saved 706, Frank Knight & George Edwards’.
Mr Teesdale said: “Before this building is either knocked down or converted into student accommodation, it would be a very simple thing for this memorial to be removed to be put in the museum.
“I had wondered if any of the relatives or friends of these two men who had made the plaque still lived in the area. With the publicity surrounding Titanic, this would be very poignant.”
