West Sussex Fire & Rescue service has been battling the flames engulfing a 80-metre haystack on farmland next to Downs Road since 6am this morning.

As of 11.30am (Thursday, March 9), there were four pumps, three 4x4s, two water carriers and a command support unit on the scene.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said that a ‘controlled burns strategy’ had now been put in place to let the approximately 3,000 ‘well alight hay bales’ burn out safely.

The incident is due to be scaled down imminently, she added.

There are no reports of any injuries.
