According to police, the Volvo driver, a 44-year-old man from Hayling Island, Hampshire, sustained minor injuries for which he was treated at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey, who is now leading the investigation, said: “We’d like to hear from anyone using that stretch of the A27 who saw the collision occur or who noticed a broken-down goods vehicle on the westbound carriageway.

“Witnesses, or anyone who has any dash-cam footage showing the stationary vehicle prior to the collision, are asked to contact the Sussex Serious Collision Investigation Unit at [email protected].

“Alternatively they can telephone 101, and in all instances they should quote Operation Anglican.”
