A van caught fire on the A27 between Chichester and Havant yesterday afternoon (August 30).
The engine of a Vauxhall Vivaro overheated and caught fire on the westbound lane of the A27, close to the junction with the A3M.
Police were forced to close the road for up to 90 minutes after the incident which occurred at 2.30pm.
The commercial van was completely destroyed by the fire and there were fears the engine had become welded to the road.
Firefighters from Havant were called to the blaze and put it out after 20 minutes.
Watch manager Craig Sadler said: “It was a well-alight, severe fire. Our job was to make the area safe and make sure the driver was okay. He was shaken but alright.”
Firefighters managed to open one lane of traffic and police had reopened the road completely by 4pm.
