Although the air ambulance was called and landed between the Whyke and Bognor roundabouts yesterday (June 8), it turns out the man’s injuries were not as serious as first thought, meaning he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, in a regular ambulance.

A Volvo tipper lorry and LDV pick-up truck collided on the eastbound carriageway yesterday at 4.20pm.

The 30-year-old driver of the pick-up truck, from Caerphilly, was detained at Royal Sussex overnight for treatment to cuts and bruises.

Meanwhile the 33-year-old lorry driver from Portsmouth was unhurt.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended and the road was closed for two hours while the incident was dealt with. The Caerphilly driver had to be freed from his vehicle by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services.
