An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team are examining a suspected toxic substance at Westhampnett rubbish tip, police have confirmed.
Police said officers were called at around 10.40am after a small amount of the unknown substance - believed to be vintage mustard gas - was left by a member of the public at the Westhampnett Depot in Stane Street.
A cordon has been put in place as a precaution and the area cleared, but there are no reported injuries, police said.
Emergency services at the scene.
