A MAN has been arrested after the alleged rape of a woman in North Bersted.
The 27-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of rape at lunchtime today (Tuesday, July 2) by detectives investigating the incident and he is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.
The 21-year-old woman, who lives locally, is receiving expert medical treatment and support. Detectives are in the process of establishing exactly what has happened.
The alleged incident took place around 3am in the Chichester Road area.
Detective Inspector Jim McKnight said: “Enquiries are at an early stage but we are already making progress. At present this is being treated as an isolated incident.
