VIDEO: Faulty Chichester railway crossing closes road

A road is closed after a level crossing’s barrier started rising and lowering intermittently, with its lights flashing randomly.

Whyke Road is now closed, after police were called at 3.05pm to reports of the faulty barrier.

Chichester Police officers have closed Whyke Road, however two buses that were waiting to cross the line are stuck.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We’ve got a fault with the level crossing and engineers are on site.

“Unfortunately, the nature of the fault means that the barriers will remain down while repairs are carried out.

“The police are there to manage the road element and our engineers are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.”

He added: “We apologise sincerely to anyone who has had their journey disrupted because of this incident.”

Writing on Twitter, Amanda Duquenoy said: “Certainly worrying as some people were making a run for it but no one knew what to do.”

A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed the fault was fixed at 7.20pm – around four hours after the incident was reported.

Speaking on Tuesday morning (May 20), he said: “It was actually a fault with the signalling system, which has had a side effect of affecting the level crossing.

“Therefore what we did is put the barriers down for safety reasons.

“Obviously, that meant the road was closed and we apologise for the inconvenience that caused.

“With level crossings, we can’t mess about. Safety is the priority.”
