The demolition of the old inshore boathouse and museum has been completed, marking the start of a major project to build a modern new station for the Selsey lifeboats.

The current boathouse was built in 1959/60 and is showing its age considerably after being battered by storms for more than 50 years.

The first part of the project saw the inshore boathouse and museum demolished by machinery last week.

The next phase will see the main offshore boathouse at the end of the pier knocked down in April, before an all-encompassing new facility will be built to house both lifeboats under one roof.

The need for a new boathouse arose when the RNLI allocated a new state-of-the-art Shannon class lifeboat to Selsey, to replace the old Tyne class all-weather lifeboat which has come to the end of its operational life.

The cost of the project is £1.7m and has been funded by donations from the general public.

As well as housing both lifeboats, the new building will feature a crew changing room, a training room, workshop, station office, as well as a public viewing area and shop.

The volunteer crew will maintain the lifeboat service at Selsey during the project, which is expected to take 45 weeks to complete.
