VIDEO: Space2Earth challenge at Chichester High

The Space2Earth Challenge set the girls and boys a target to travel 400km, the same distance Major Tim went in a rocket to the International Space Station.

All the students scheduled to have PE on the day took part and happily ran and cycled, encouraged by a good luck message from Major Tim himself.

Tracey Waller, marketing and publicity co-ordinator, said: “The day was made special because the event was held in The Tim Peake Sports and Conference Centre, which Tim formally opened in 2009 when he came back to school.

“Tim even sent us a ‘good luck’ message from space. He took one of the school badges up with him to the ISS and sent us a picture.”

“We smashed it! We ran and cycled an amazing 1587.76km. Basically, we ran and cycled from Space to Earth, Earth to Space, Space to Earth and just short of getting back to the International Space Station.

“Year-ten student Harry Benham powered his bike to 74kmph.”

The event has been devised by Venture Thinking, the Ideas Foundation and British Triathlon Trust for the UK Space Agency and ESA.

The Space2Earth and the Triathlon Trust took lots of static bikes to the school and all the equipment needed to ensure the running and cycling was recorded.
