VIDEO: Trust working to reopen lost canal

THE Wey & Arun Canal Trust has been working for more than 40 years to reopen ‘London’s lost route to sea’ after it was abandoned in 1871.

The trust has been restoring the locks along the 23-mile stretch of the Wey and Arun canal – and its latest project will allow boats to travel the Sussex-Surrey border for the first time in 145 years.

What makes the story all the more fascinating is the huge restoration project is entirely driven by fundraising and volunteers.
