Warning after two girls are swept out to sea at Pagham Harbour

The Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team, along with the inshore lifeboat, was tasked to the incident at Pagham Harbour on Wednesday (September 2). The Littlehampton Coastguard Team was also tasked to assist.

“As we were proceeding reports came in that the girls had made it ashore at the end of the spit by Church Norton,” a spokesperson for the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said.

“We requested that the inshore lifeboat continued to proceed with us incase any medical assistance was needed.”

Both casualties were assessed and, ‘apart from being cold and shaken’, no further medical assistance was needed.

The spokesperson continued: “Blankets were provided to keep them warm.

“Selsey Inshore Lifeboat took the two casualties back to their parents on the other side of the harbour entrance.

“All assets were then stood down to return to station.”

The Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team warned that tides and currents can be extremely strong and can easily drag you out to sea, adding: “Do not attempt to swim by Pagham Harbour entrance.

“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not.

“Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble. Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
