West Sussex firefighters strike today

FIREFIGHTERS will strike today (November 13), between 10am and 2pm.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it would still be responding to emergencies but was appealing for people to take extra care and reduce the demand on 999 services.

A spokeswoman said: “The fire and rescue service in West Sussex has contingency plans in place to minimise the impact of the strike action and is confident emergency services to the public will be provided by non-striking staff and firefighters who are not members of the FBU.

“However, we expect to have fewer resources available and we realise it will be challenging to meet normal emergency response times.

“Calls will be prioritised on those with the most potential risk to life so we are appealing in particular to residents, businesses and road users to take a few simple steps and help protect themselves and reduce the risks to others.”

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is involved in a dispute with the government over changes to firefighter pensions.

This is the fourth strike related to the dispute.

The spokeswoman added: “Ensuring your home has a working smoke alarm, not leaving cooking or candles unattended, extinguishing cigarettes properly, or even planning a little extra time for your journey can make the difference between needing to dial 999 or not.

“We therefore again urge people to take extra care, but we want people to know we are still here if we are needed, so still dial 999 if you have a genuine emergency.”
