So when Mike heard that St Wilfrid’s Hospice Dreambuilding appeal was running its Dream Wheelers challenge, he couldn’t sign up quick enough.

Mike has been known to even up the stakes by choosing a less conventional approach to the type of two wheels he uses - including riding his tendem with wife Janet.

If that wasn’t test enough, Mike has pushed himself further still, varying his training with a ride around the local area on his mini Penny Farthing.

“I have been cycling for 35 years, it’s a great way to keep fit and I particularly enjoy cycling through France,” Mike said. “The Dream Wheelers route takes you through not only key historic landmarks, but also along beautiful scenic roads.

“While I do cycle regularly, 50 miles per day is challenging enough, while still being achievable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness and a bit of training under their belts.

“It’s also not so long that you don’t have time to enjoy a few stops along the way and time to wind down and get to know fellow cyclists in the evening.”

Mike is looking forward to his next challenge and will be one of up to 30 participants taking on the 101-mile Dream Wheelers route through Normandy, France on July 15 and 16. As reported last week, St Wilfrid’s Hospice has just hit 80 per cent of the £15.5m it needs to build a new hospice in Bosham to allow the charity’s amazing staff to continue their expert end-of-life care.

Around £3m is still needed to make the dream a reality.

There are still a few places left on the Dream Wheelers bike ride. To join Mike on this fun challenge, visit www.dreambuilding.org.uk or contact Chloe Neilson-Hopkins on 01243 775186 or [email protected]. Registration is £300, which covers the cost of all travel, accommodation and support. Registration closes on Sunday, April 16.
