Residents from the Witterings have paid tribute to a well-known local former bobby and councillor as he leaves the area behind for pastures new.

Author Keith Smith leaves East Wittering after 45 years of serving the village in numerous roles.

He worked as a police officer in the area for 17 years and was a Chichester district councillor, and an East and West Wittering parish councillor.

Mr Smith moves to Lincoln with his wife Janet this week.

Close friend David Hopson from West Wittering joked Mr Smith could not even get a pint of milk down the road without bumping into someone who wanted to talk to him.

He added: “Keith has made an astonishing contribution to the village – nearly 50 years of public service to the Witterings. I think that is really impressive.”

Speaking of his connection with the village, Mr Smith said: “I have always tried to serve the community to the best of my ability.

“I have met many challenges along the way, but I feel passionately that to get the most out of your local environment, you need to put something in. It is no good moaning – do something about it.”
