A £2M PROJECT to improve sports facilities at the University of Chichester has got underway.

Amiri Construction, based in Fareham, is to build a sports dome with three netball and four tennis courts at the university’s Bishop Otter Campus in Chichester.

An outdoor netball court and new cricket nets will also be constructed, with the road on the south side of the campus being widened. The works are set to be completed by August.

A turf-cutting ceremony was held on the university’s athletics track to mark the start of the work.

On the north side, works for a new Olympic-standard eight lane athletics track with jump pits and tracks is under way. This is expected to be completed by June.

Officials from the university were joined by athletes from the Chichester Runners and Athletics Club who would be using the facilities.

Amiri director Kevin Lendon said the company was delighted to start the projects.
