Work to be carried out on '˜dangerous' Selsey road

The county council will carry out work along a Selsey road labelled '˜dangerous' by residents to '˜mitigate the risk' to people using it.

People living in Manor Lane say the grass verges are being churned up and the mud in the road has nearly caused accidents.

West Sussex County Council said it had entered into an agreement with Barratt Homes, the developer at East Beach Walk, to harden sections of the damaged verges.

“West Sussex County Council is working closely with the developer and Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to mitigate the risk to pedestrians and road users,” a spokesperson said.

“We are aware of the presence of mud on the road and damage caused to the verges and carriageway.

“As such we are entering into an agreement with the developer to temporarily harden sections of the verge to limit the dragging of mud onto the carriageway.

“The hardening work is planned to be undertaken in the next week or so.

“We are also entering into a legal agreement with the developer over the impact of extra-ordinary traffic onto the network, placing liability for maintenance and damage on them.

“The route that construction traffic is using is the agreed route within the developers construction management plan as agreed by Chichester District Council.

“West Sussex County Council officers have been frequently monitoring this situation and requesting cleansing as and when necessary, above that already being completed by the developer.

“It does however need to be appreciated that the current weather condition in combination with Southern Gas Networks now working in this area have exasperated an already difficult situation.”
