Yapton pupils make faces at Pallant House Gallery

A group of Yapton Primary School children have explored the theme of identity via a Young Arts Project.

On Tuesday June 8, several Year Six students were invited to learn about portraiture and self-expression during a guided tour and creative workshop at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, sponsored by the Walberton Decorative and Fine Arts Society (DFAS).

“Their day was a tremendous success and resulted in a great deal of lively discussion, creative art work and, above all, fun,” said Walberton DFAS chair Margaret Robertson.

The project offered the chance to view and discuss a wide variety of portraits ranging from Elvis and the Beatles to a homeless immigrant, an art collector and a she-devil. Students were encouraged to express their own interpretations of the paintings and look for underlying meanings and hidden messages.

Led by Gallery guide Judith Martin, they experimented with different styles and approaches to portraiture.

This included the chance to put their heads in a picture frame and pose for portraits of kings, poets and philosophers.

The children also put their new-found ideas into practice at the creative workshop, decorating masks with rainbows, clouds, stars, lightning bolts, football colours and super heroes.

“Watching the children explore and question and understand that there are no rights and wrongs in expressing their ideas about art was the most rewarding aspect of the day,” said class teacher Chris Hughes.
