On a sunny day with a cooling breeze, 142 people strolled across the South Downs for the Wey and Arun Canal Trust.

Proceeds from the annual Poddle last Sunday totalled £6,750 and with the Gift Aid on most of the proceeds, the trust was able to top it up to more than £8,000.

The money will go to restoration projects along the length of the canal, which runs 23 miles from Pallingham to Shalford in Surrey.

This year, the Poddle started and finished at St Michael’s Church hall in Amberley, following an 12½-mile route across the South Downs National Park.

Walk organiser Margaret Darvill said: “We are most grateful to all the people of several generations who found sponsors and walked on the Poddle.

“Thanks also to the volunteers who helped stage the walk, from those who made all the arrangements and marked out the route to the people who provided refreshments and acted as marshals.”
